Seo
Minju Seo is a South Korean artist born in Yeosu. She earned her BFA in Painting from Sungshin Women's University in Seoul and is currently pursuing her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
Minju Seo weaves memory, materiality, and history into layered visual forms that hold traces of the past. Drawing from personal and collective narratives, she transforms materials into vessels of time and memory.
Her work moves between introspection and historical inquiry, mapping the tension between presence and absence through fragmented images and delicate layering.
Rooted in history and lived experience, Seo’s practice embraces imperfection and chance, offering quiet reflections on impermanence and the unseen forces that shape time and place.
서민주 작가는 기억, 물질성, 그리고 시간의 중첩을 탐구한다. 개인적 서사와 집단적 역사 속에서 남겨진 흔적을 따라, 사라짐과 잔존 사이의 긴장을 회화와 오브제를 통해 시각화한다.
작가에게 재료는 단순한 매체를 넘어 시간과 경험을 품은 존재로 작용하며, 흐름과 변화 속에서 물성을 확장시킨다. 작가는 사람들이 머물렀던 장소와 지나간 순간, 그리고 사라진 후에도 잔향처럼 남는 목소리를 더듬으며 기억의 결을 좇는다.
작품은 재료의 변형과 중첩을 통해 기억의 불완전성과 역사적 층위를 드러낸다. 부재는 중요한 요소로 작용하며, 지워진 것들과 보이지 않는 것들이 은은히 떠오른다. 그렇게 작업은 시간이 켜켜이 쌓인 지층이 되어, 묻힌 이야기와 변화하는 시선을 담아낸다.
회화와 물질의 경계를 실험하는 과정 속에서, 작가의 작업은 사물과 기억의 덧없음을 조용히 탐문하고, 우리 가 익숙하게 받아들이는 시간과 공간, 그리고 그 안에 숨겨진 힘에 대한 새로운 사유를 제안한다.
